Inside the Mind of a Project Team:
Improve You Leadership Effectiveness by Understanding How Teams Think
Session Overview – While typical sessions on developing successful project teams focus on team building and progress tracking, this session will take you on a journey inside the mind of a project team. Drawing from extensive leadership experience and recent research along with case studies from the fields of psychology and behavioral economics, this session explores truths and myths surrounding team behaviors such as:
- Group Brainstorming
- Creativity
- Group habits
- Team Motivation
The goal of the session is to provide tools that any leader can use to make their team more effective by understanding how to apply the following:
- The Candle Problem
- Intrinsic Incentives
- Meta-ideas
Learning Objectives
- Recognize why leaders need to understand cognitive processes to help them better lead their teams.
- Understand specific psychological and behavioral factors that influence project team actions.
- Learn strategies to increase the effectiveness of a project team.
Project Origination:
How Project Managers Can Prevent the Next Arch Deluxe
How Project Managers Can Prevent the Next Arch Deluxe
Session Overview - Popular
thinking tends to believe that the most critical phase in determining the
success of a project is Project Planning. This session will challenge this
belief and provide real life examples of costly product failures which will
demonstrate how Project Managers can make their most critical contributions
even before the project begins.
The
best managed project in the world will not provide value to an organization
that has selected the wrong project to undertake.
This session explains how we can improve the success of our projects during Project Origination by understanding:
- Recent product failures
- The Egg Theory
- How Wal-Mart drives prices lower
- How one organization improved the performance of students in Kenya
- Recognize why Project Managers need to play a critical role during the selection of projects.
- Understand the critical components of a business case and how to develop them.
- Learn how you can help insure that your organization is selecting the right projects.
Project Review Boards:

Session Overview – Most
of us have had the experience of participating on a project that should be
cancelled. Unfortunately too many organizations waste a tremendous amount of
resources by continuing to execute projects that will never fulfill their
business objectives. The reasons for this waste include both procedural and
psychological factors. This presentation compliments the Project Origination
presentation and examines several of these reasons and provides methods that
organizations can employ to avoid spending additional resources on projects
that will fail to deliver the intended business results.
While
the goal of the Project Origination presentation is to help ensure
organizations don’t initiate projects that are not aligned with business needs,
this presentation demonstrates why and how organizations should cancel
in-flight projects that fail to fulfill business needs by understanding;
- Overvaluation Theory
- Sunk Cost Fallacy
- The Winner’s Curse
Learning Objectives
- Recognize why organizations need to use their power to kill projects.
- Understand the procedural and psychological factors that prevent organizations from using this power.
- Learn how organizations can overcome these factors to improve overall organizational efficiency.
